Kelly Abell Talks About Ideas

I’m thrilled to bring you my new guest blogger. I want to welcome author Kelly Abell to the blog. It is a pleasure to have you take over the blog today….Thank you so much…

Thanks for having me Savannah.  It is great to be able to be a guest on your wonderful blog.  I must say, you make Hump Day a lot more pleasant!  I struggled a little with what I wanted to write about so that your readers could get to know me as a writer and I settled on a question I get asked all the time.  Where do your stories come from?

I do have a creative mind and I could give you the pat answer that my characters are living in my head, and they do, but to be honest most of my story ideas come from the newspaper or every day happenings that I experience.  My first book Sealed In Lies, came from a news story that occurred in Virginia back in the early 2000’s.  A  man broke into a prominent Senator’s house and when caught by his wife, decides to kidnap her.  When he discovered who she was he let her go immediately.  She was fine and all was well.  Now, I asked myself, What if she didn’t want to go?  What if her life was so horrible with this man she was married to and he was so abusive that she would see a kidnapping as a means of escape?  Thus, Sealed In Lies was born.
Here’s the blurb for Sealed In Lies:

Jack Weaver can’t seem to escape a life of lies.  First as a Seal, then as an undercover CIA operative working in the largest drug cartel in Columbia Jack’s entire existence is based on being someone other than who he truly is.  While serving as Chief Security Officer to one of the most dangerous men on earth Jack uncovers a plot to assassinate the President-Elect on Inauguration Day.  Suddenly things become infinitely worse when his ex-SEAL commander who is now a Deputy Director with the CIA shows up and blows his cover.  Forced to kill him, Jack is now on the run not only for his life but he’s the only one who knows about the assassination attempt, other than a mysterious man who calls himself the Emperor and seems to be calling all the shots.

Moreover, Jack is being haunted by terrifying dreams from his past that seem to be connected to this entire conspiracy involving his old SEAL team.  Desperate for answers Jack breaks into the home of Vice-President elect Warren Walters, another SEAL teammate, where he is discovered by Warren’s abused wife Caroline.  He forces Caroline to go with him with the intentions of letting her go once he gets the information he needs.  Overcoming her fear of Jack, Caroline refuses to leave, seeing this as an opportunity to escape her own life of lies.  This starts a chain reaction of feelings neither of them is prepared for.  The Emperor has seriously underestimated Jack’s determination to find answers and is losing control over all the puppets he has in play.  As Jack and Caroline come closer and closer to the answers and each other, will they be able to save the President-elect’s life as well as their own, or will a blast from Jack’s past destroy them all?

My second novel Haunted Destiny is a Young Adult Paranormal that I wrote for my daughter trying to get her to read something…  I asked her what she would like if I were to write something for her.  She loves the Clique series by Lisa Harrison and she likes scary stories so she said “I’d like a clique ghost story.”  Well that was a tall order as I’d not written Young Adult before but had always wanted to  try my hand at it.  I began to formulate the story in my mind and my son, who wants to be a movie director, was close at hand to help.  We finally came up with what you see below.

Here’s the blurb Haunted Destiny

Destiny Dove is the only survivor of a tragic car crash that killed her parents and baby brother.  A teen uprooted from her home, she is forced to live with her eccentric grandmother whom Destiny has been taught her whole life to fear.  She must start her life over living with an old woman who is not only a stranger to her, but just strange.  All Destiny wants is to fit in with kids like her and begin to pull her life back together.

But Destiny soon discovers she is not like the other teens at all.  She has developed the family gift of being able to see and talk to ghosts and her estranged grandmother will be the one person who can help her understand what the fates have dealt her…a haunted destiny.  Being the town freak does not put Destiny high on the potential friends list, but Jake Turner sees something in her that the other teens from Blake High don’t.  Destiny is actually able to put her unique talent to use and help Jake communicate with his recently deceased sister forming a bond between them that no one else can share or know about.  In an extraordinary twist of events, Jake’s girlfriend Amy receives some furniture with some frightening ghostly spirits attached to it, and Jake turns to Destiny for help.

Now Destiny must struggle with a force she is unprepared to handle.  When a party at Amy’s becomes a showdown between good and evil will Destiny have what it takes to save Amy and the others? Will the help of her grandmother, two resident ghosts and a surprise visitor be enough to rid the Morgan family of the evil possessing them and allow Destiny to finally gain the acceptance she so desperately wants? Or will the ancient evil destroy them all?

Hi RKCharron,
I am currently working on a sequel to Sealed In Lies called Captured In Lies. Jack and Caroline just can’t seem to escape their arch nemesis!

I’ve also been asked by some readers to make Haunted Destiny a series as the book (I won’t spoil it for you) ends in a way that could be a clear series so I’m thinking about that.

Thanks so much for asking!
