Risking It All

My name is Tayana. I’m the first and only daughter of Andreas Demoro, the most respected man in the city. My father is our leader, the one man who has control of our world. He keeps us safe from dangers from outsiders, from those who walk in the sun.
As I lay here I can’t help but wonder how many times have people wished that they had a different life? Wanted to start over, be someone else, even if for only one day. Ever since I was born, my life was held in someone else’s hands.
Can you imagine being born into a world where you have no freedom; someone is watching you every moment of the day. Imagine being born into a world where you are in the middle of a war, a battle that you can’t stop or sometimes have no more energy to fight.
Since the day I was born I’ve only known, power, no freedom and the need to survive. I was born into no average family. There was no white picket fence where I live, only high tech security gates, and bodyguards. My family has power, money and everything one could ask for. But to me that is nothing.
For I’m suppose to be a creature of the night. I’m half immortal. Nobody outside our kind can ever know I exist or I will die.
I had no control over what I did or wanted to do but now the time has come for me to set my own fate. Follow my own destination. I have to reason with my father. Try to make him understand. I don’t want to live the life he’s planned for me. I want to live my own life. I want freedom that I have never known.
Tayana heard the knock on the door and quickly shut her journal and hid it under the floor boards. Her secret hiding place since she was a little girl.
“Tayana, Jenny is waiting for you downstairs” said the male voice from behind the door.
“I’m coming, give me a moment,” she replied before she took one final glance at the floorboards and headed for the door.
*****
“So what happened last night?” Andreas barred his fangs, demanding to know as Michael and Steven- his bodyguards, the twins entered the office where he sat behind the big mahogany desk.
“Is my daughter safe?”
“She’s safe sir, you have nothing to worry about,” Steven answered as he approached closer.
“I managed to dust one of them. Sir she knows how to handle herself. You have nothing to worry about.” Michael added.
Andreas wasn’t pleased to hear that his daughter had to engage in a battle. That’s the perfect chance for the Malace to get her in their hands. Exactly what they want.
He knew he should have never let her go to the dinner party. That was no place for her, especially this close to her mating.
“Where is Tayana now?”
“She’s in the gym. Jenny’s training with her.”
All he had to do was keep his beloved daughter safe for two more weeks. Then she would be mated and everything would change. She would take her rightful place , she would take his place.
“Go make sure everything’s okay. I want to be sure,” he commanded.
The doors closed to his office and he swung his chair around to face the window behind him. With the click of a button the shutters opened to reveal a clear night sky.
He couldn’t explain it, deep down he knew something was going to happen. Something that would change his life and the lives of all that he cared deeply for. He’d already lost of the most important people in his life. He couldn’t bare to loose another. Tayana was his last remaining true blood line.

*****
Tayana sat cross legged in the middle of the gym floor. Her eyes closed her breathing slow and steady. She heard the sound of the lights being shut down. She could sense the darkness embrace her. Feel it as it took hold of her. The darkness she knew all so well. The darkness that was a part of her. It was a part of something she could never escape. It was something she had to know if she wanted to survive.
Focusing on what was happening around her, her eyes were still closed. Using her senses to guide her. She could already see where Jenny was in the dark. She could hear her deliberately slowed breathing as she moved closer. She was holding something in her hand. The subtle change in the air around her was a dead give away. Jenny had a weapon in her hand, not just any weapon. She was twirling a Bo Staff.
Leaning back on the matt she moved out of the way of the Bo staff – a bamboo stick- that was coming straight at her. With one swift move she back flipped onto her feet. The darkness didn’t bother her. She loved closing her eyes to sharpen her skill.
“I don’t know why I even bother to kick your ass. Even with your eyes closed you are better than any of your father’s goons,” Jenny said as she prepared for her next strike.
“I know but I want to be the best. You know that once I step up and take over my father’s place things will be a lot different. My bodyguards won’t always be around to protect me. You know I was never a wussy and had to fight my own battles.”
The day was quickly approaching when her time would come to take over her fathers role, she would be the princess of the city and in her world that carried an automatic death sentence. The clans were always looking for a role to eliminate the leader so that they could take over and do things their way.
The biggest threat to her family was the Malace, they were a bunch of rogue vampires who never got use to the fact that they had to follow someone else’s leadership. They wanted things to be like they were in the old days. When they could run the city and take what they wanted.
Many centuries ago the vampire elders reached an agreement with all the clans, it was the only way to continue the survival of all the night walkers, and that brought on a prince for every century to run the clans. There had to be someone to keep the peace amongst the clans or their kind wouldn’t make it. They had to find a way to survive as the times changed. They also had to protect themselves from the mortals who were hunting them down.
“You ready to make this interesting?” Jenny asked as she shot a glance towards the wall where the different weapons hung.
“Girl you know you don’t have to ask,” she said and opened her eyes.
Jenny tossed another Bo staff towards Tayana before she made her way to the wall and grabbed a set of silver eight point shuriken – throwing stars.
A smile spread across Tayana’s face. “Now you’re talking.”
Without another word Jenny threw the first star towards her. Tayana jerked and caught the shuriken with her Bo staff.
“Is that all you got?” she teased.
Jenny retaliated by letting go of three more stars.
Tayana back flipped, coming inches to the shuriken- stars as they came inches to her body. Such little weapons but they could do way much more damage then anyone could imagine. When she first started training she’d had a few mishaps and had the first hand experience to experience what it felt to get hit with one of them.
More shuriken flew her way and with every one of them she caught them with her stick.

I have to admit I did linger a bit on the guy with the pumkin. He might be my favorite from the hops.

And anybody else do a double-take with the fireman? Because…um …yeah.

Thanks for the story intro as well as the eye candy!
