The night had been long, full of battle. Too many lost lives. Tonight’s many of his brothers perished to the hunter’s blade. The scent of blood clung to his skin, stained his clothes. He dreaded this part of his life. Sooner or later his hunters would catch up to him. Every day he stepped outside into the night was suicide.

He’d lived like this for centuries and he could not change the card that life had dealt him.
He perched himself on top of the rooftop of the high-rise and closed his eyes for a moment. Letting the gentle night breeze cool his heated skin. Take away the pain of his aching flesh. His heart still thumped full force in his chest from the battle. Adrenaline clutched at his body.

“She will know the pain she has caused my family,” he whispered into the night.

He would make her pay. For every life she took. For every heart she stopped tonight. Her face was now burned into his memory. It would haunt him until he got payback. The day would come when he would savor the moment when he held her life in his hands.

Vanus inhaled deeply and his eyes fluttered open. The sweet scent of roses filled the air around him. He knew just where it came from. They were her beautiful and comforting scent.

Each night before the sun came up he came here to think. To clear his mind, and try to erase the memories of the night. For a moment he wanted to feel human again and when he laid eyes on her for a second he almost thought he could feel it again. She made him forget everything about who he was, a creature of the night.

You really bring out the conflicted sides – the hatred, yearning, longing, bittersweet – and make the reader sympathetic. Great piece, Savannah!
